MARYLAND TECH LEADERS SEND LETTER TO MARYLAND HOUSE OF DELEGATES URGING REPEAL OF COMPUTER SERVICES SALES TAX

 

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (April 4, 2008) – The Tech Council of Maryland (TCM) called upon the Maryland House of Delegates to support SB 46, which calls for the repeal of the six percent Computer Services Sales Tax. SB 46 passed the Maryland Senate yesterday in a 30-17 vote. In a letter sent to the House, TCM urged members to repeal the tech tax that would cripple the state’s IT economy if enacted.

In a letter sent to House members, TCM Chief Executive Officer Julie Coons said, “Given the role of technology in Maryland's economy and the role of the computer services industry in our economic future, repeal of this tax is one of the most important and far reaching public policy decisions that you will have the opportunity to make.”

“We understand and appreciate that difficult decisions must be made in order to repeal the computer services sales tax, however, we believe that the compromises offered in this legislation are the best options for ensuring Maryland’s technology economy,” the letter continued.

As the fight to repeal the Computer Services Sales Tax moves to the House, TCM will continue to bring the technology industry’s message to legislators.
